Different Ways to Give

Gifts of Financial Support

It is expensive to operate a homeless shelter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. Monetary donations enable NLHHC to purchase the materials and services critical to running our Shelter and providing support to our community.

You can donate once; on a regular basis, such as monthly or yearly; or even set up planned giving.

Fundraising drives are also a great way to support your most vulnerable neighbors. From your own social media page or in person, you can collect money for a birthday fundraiser, school project, or just because you care.

Stock

Donating stock can be a smart and generous way to give. You may avoid capital gains taxes and receive a charitable deduction for the full market value.

A gift of stock may be right for you if:

Your stocks have grown in value, and you would like to avoid capital gains taxes
You want to make a significant gift without affecting your cash flow

IRA and Retirement Plan Assets

A qualifying charitable donation allows you to donate up to $100,000 per year directly to a qualifying charity from your IRA, and exclude it from your income. The qualifying charitable deduction must go directly from your IRA to your chosen charitable organization.

You can use this qualified charitable distribution to satisfy your annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your retirement account. If you are aged 70.5 years or older, this is a charitable giving tool to consider. The portion of your RMD that you donate to charity reduces your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) dollar for dollar.

Trusts

A charitable remainder trust (CRT) allows you to receive income from assets through the CRT during your lifetime. The remaining assets after your lifetime can be distributed to your favorite charity or charities.

A charitable lead trust (CLT) allows you to distribute income to your charitable fund for a period of years during your lifetime. Then, the assets return to you or a surviving family member or members. This kind of charitable trust allows you to make a gift to charity and transfer assets to family members while saving taxes.

Life Insurance

You can designate the New London Homeless Hospitality Center as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy. This is a powerful tool for supporting our community; it helps ensure that we can be here to stand with our neighbors experiencing homelessness for generations to come.

If you choose to designate NLHHC as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy, please inform us so we can express our gratitude for your selflessness!

Make a Bequest in Your Will

This is one of the simplest ways to make a planned gift. You pay nothing now, but leave a beautiful legacy when you name the New London Homeless Hospitality Center as a designee in your estate plans.

Gifts by Wire Transfer

For security reasons, NLHHC does not publish wire transfer information details online. If you would like to make a donation by wire, we will provide the instructions directly to you or your financial institution.

In-Kind Donations

An "in-kind" donation is a non-cash contribution given to a non-profit organization: physical goods, property, professional services, etc.

At NLHHC, our operating needs change frequently, so you can check out our Amazon Wishlist to see what items we currently need; any item you purchase will be shipped directly to our Shelter!

If you have other in-kind donations you would like to share that are not included on this list, we encourage you to donate clothing and household goods to the Jumble Shoppe at St. James Episcopal Church. Please call Homeward Bound Treasures at (860) 834-0193 regarding furniture donations. Our guests benefit from our partnership with both of these organizations.

Physical donations can be dropped off at NLHHC's Shelter at 325 Huntington Street, New London 06320 (use the address 730 State Pier Road in your GPS for more accurate parking directions). Our Daytime Hospitality Center is open daily from 8:00am-11:00am and from 12:30pm-4:00pm. We kindly ask that you hand gifts directly to our staff and fill out the required donation form. Please do not leave donations outside-thank you!
