Derek -- Guest Profile

Derek came to the shelter in October of 2019. It was a hard step for him to take, because he wasn’t used to asking for help. He’s glad that he finally did ask for help, however, because he was able to access many resources within the shelter to get him back on his feet and back into housing.

Working with our Employment Coordinator, Derek was able to find a job at Walmart. In addition, the shelter helped him reconnect with the Bureau of Rehab Services (BRS) to support him in his newfound employment with things like transportation and job coaching.

Finally, working with our amazing housing team, Derek was able to find an apartment and recently moved from the shelter to his own place. When asked what he would say about his experience at the shelter, he just had two words-- “awesome staff!”
