Put your Energy and Talents to Good Use

We have volunteer opportunities that take as little as a few hours per month. You can help with a one-time project or come every week. We welcome individuals as well as groups.

Some of the most common jobs are described below.  If you don’t see something that fits your skills and interests, call us. We will design a volunteer option around your time and skills. We will provide all the training you need.

A regular weekly commitment of a few hours is ideal. Shift hours are typically 8:30am - 12:30pm or 12:30pm - 4:30pm.

Welcome Desk

Assist the staff in running the shelter by operating the front desk. This includes welcoming people, answering phones, and solving problems.

Help Center

Assist guests in resolving small issues to help them rebuild their lives. Work with them on resumes, job and housing applications, or financial aid for school. Assist guests in obtaining a driver’s license or CT ID, manage guest mail, and provide bus tickets when necessary.

Evening Shelter Support

Greet guests as they arrive for the evening. Help check them in, assign beds, answer questions and manage supplies.
This is an opportunity to build friendships and become more involved in our efforts to end homelessness.

This role requires a regular commitment. For the evening shift you’ll work from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. the same day each week.

Food Servers

Bring in a prepared meal and serve it to guests on weekends for breakfast, lunch (12:00 p.m.), or dinner (7:00 p.m.). (We do not have a kitchen for preparing meals on-site.)

Bring in a snack such as cookies, muffins, cheese and crackers, trail mix, a vegetable plate, hard-boiled eggs, etc., during traditional snack time hours, including around 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Set up, welcome guests, and then share some social time.

To schedule a time to bring a meal, contact our volunteer coordinator.

Maintenance Days

We welcome the help of faith groups and service organizations for large projects like mopping floors, washing windows, organizing closets and cabinets, helping with landscaping and doing general maintenance.

Workshops

If you have a special skill or talent that you’d like to share with our guests, we encourage you to share it.

Our workshops have included drawing, poetry and writing, but we welcome any kind of talent you enjoy.

Workshops are held in the shelter between 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. They are a great way to share what you love while giving guests a way to relax and clear their minds at the end of the day.
