A Dream Come True

Mary Ellen was a guest at the Homeless Hospitality Center about a year ago, after a living situation with a friend became untenable. As she reflected back on her time at the shelter, she notes that it was hard at first, but eventually, she was able to access a number of resources, including getting help finding a job and housing. Once housed, a staff member was able to help her obtain kitchen items and other household goods.

Mary Ellen is doing well and enjoys her job at Lowes. She was even able to buy a car recently, which has helped make her commute to work much easier and make it possible to visit her family in Massachusetts. She notes that her confidence is higher than it used to be, and she is excited to be going back to school to get her bachelor’s degree in social work.

When asked what she would say to people who are at the shelter now, Mary Ellen said she would encourage people to remain hopeful. “It can feel really bleak when you’re in it,” she said, but if you take advantage of all the resources that are available, you really can make your dreams come true.”
